Frequently Asked Questions

Printing on glass is easier than ever with a digital flatbed UV printer. Print directly onto glass bottles and jars, windowpanes, wine glasses and screens, on a single printing machine.

Compact benchtop machines are ideal for printing directly onto smaller glass objects like trophies, gifts, or even gin bottles and other items with a curve. Flatbed printers come in larger sizes too, making it possible to print on glass tabletops or even glass doors or wall panels. You can also add 3D textured effects with clear UV ink, which can look as great as it feels.

The ultra-smooth, non-porous and relatively reflective surface of glass can sometimes be a challenge without the right preparation, but the results are certainly worth the extra effort. Pre-treating the surface can help you achieve the right level of adhesion. Printable UV primer is a useful tool and it can be applied to the surface where you are printing ink, so there is no waste or overuse.

PDF and EPS files are the most flexible format and are compatible with most RIP platforms as they can contain bitmap and vector information. TIFF files can also be used to reliably retain image quality, but their large size can make them challenging to share and can cause issues with slower computers.

UV ink is very durable and resistant to most chips and scratches. On outdoor applications, the print will usually last around two years before it starts to fade, but if correctly laminated, it will last even longer. Indoor applications are likely to have a much longer lifespan and will often last the expected life span of the product.

Spot UV is a term used to describe the application of a clear ink for highlighting elements of the design. This creates an eye-catching, glossy finish in specific areas, for example on logos or text.

Because the ink is cured instantly at low temperatures, UV printers use much less energy than other technologies which rely on heat to dry the ink. Also, the lamps require no warm-up time, which reduces standby consumption when not in use.
